2019 - 2020 Standings

Every year thousands of poets participate in local slams across the world from August to May competing to earn enough points to be on a team. Teams comprised of the top poets from each scene go far and wide to attend regional and national tournaments!

To make the Twin Cities’ Poetry Slam Team, you have to attend and compete in our monthly Slam, Button Poetry Live, every first Monday of the month. At the end of the season, the best ranked poets will qualify to secure a spot on the team.

Each month, we will update the standings so you can see how your favorite poets are doing!

Mock/Current Standings here until BPL August

Scoring — 1st place — 8 points; 2nd place — 4 points; 3rd place — 2 points; other competitors — 1 point; volunteers — 1 point

POET 1: 8 + 4 + 2

POET 2: 4 + 2 + 1

POET 3: 2 + 1 + 1

POET 4: 1 + 1 + 1

The rules

Each poem must be of the poet’s own construction. Each poet gets three minutes (plus a ten-second grace period) per poem. If the poet goes over time, points will be deducted from the total score. The poet may not use props, costumes or musical instruments. Of the scores the poet received from the five judges (random audience volunteers), the high and low scores are dropped and the middle three are added together, giving the poet a total score of 0-30.
